Every now and again when I'm not at my own computer, I start a new bare-naked (clothes? who needs em!) default client toon and randomly spawn in the wilderness. I really enjoy the vigor of early gameplay survival, the way many of us knew it.
From the get-go, I leech up my shoeless feet, and immediately start my hunt - not for boar, bear, fox, or rabbits... but instead I hunt for a bucket, boat, fishing rod, chicken, and something to drink from. I make my toon interact with everything. At this baby blue-eyes stage, I have no choice but to steal from those who do not have Yeomanry.. so I'm more or less a wandering hermit. Once I have completed my hunt (sometimes it takes 10 mins, other times an hour or longer), I begin my search for good resources or conversation. It can be very hard to find either one of those things, so these new chars often end up 6 feet under.
Anyways, my point to you sir:
As was stated before.. get yourself a boat, some leeches from a swamp, and fish the night away. Eventually, you'll notice that some food will give you certain fep bonuses -say for example, INT- which in turn, you will need to study curios and accumulate Learning Points to purchase skills such as Yeomanry, or Rage, Fishing, Hunting, Stone Working, etc.. or STR which will help you mine more quickly, or even battle more proficiently. There's a certain point after you've spent some time gathering resources, building a wall, shelter, and taming a few animals in which hunger is no longer your biggest concern. Don't forget that you'll need to diversify your diet (if you haven't already) so you can even out your attributes. it's a good idea to start that early.
