Obama has stated he will veto the law if it ever gets through Congress, which, after the "minority" of Americans voiced their opinion, has lost the votes needed to pass the SOPA bill as co-sponsors and other congress things alike have suddenly decided not to support it.

I know you foreigners have no faith in our democracy, but when Americans get pissed people die or politicians lose jobs so shit gets done or, as in this case, doesn't get done.

A delay doesn't mean that it won't ever come into effect. Obama (probably) won't be president for much longer and then they might dig out those old forms again.

Don't believe me? Try to search for ACTA, the european version of this bullshit. Gets dug out again and again too and everytime they somehow manage to make a little piece of it come true without people even noticing. People said as well there that such a thing could never become reality...and then they stopped looking close enough.

Facebook, Twitter etc etc. that sounds like a lot of leverage at first, but the power of the lobbies is still pretty unaffected by all the internet startups. They have to first find their way into politics and for now the big, bad Hollywood bouncer is blocking the door and at the same time whispering into the politicians ears what they gotta do next.

Speaking of said lobby: http://www.mpaa.org/resources/c4c3712a-7b9f-4be8-bd70-25527d5dfad8.pdf

Career politician and complete fuckhead Chris Dodd is the head of the MPAA and the fact that they hired such a worthless lobbiest makes the collapse of this bill all the more satisfying.

If these corporations want to stop internet piracy then they need to spend money out of their own pockets and not stifle the freedom of the internet and spend taxpayer money forcing search engines to play internet police. Good fucking luck shitheads, every piece of technology you create to stop the hackers is obsolete 7-10 days later.

Members of Congress don't always know the contents of the bills which are passed, they rely on staffers for briefings and summaries. Furthermore, mid and low level legislators are beholden to the majority and minority leaders/whips of each party, if leadership wants an up or down vote then they are expected to fall in line and do as they are told. If they do cross the leadership then leadership may remove them from plumb committee tasks and strip them of office funding (nice office and lots of staffers).

That's the preamble, the nuts and bolts of office life. Get reelected a few times and then beat-down recalcitrant legislators. Patronage, kickbacks and lobbyists. Profit.

If congressional leaders are forced to withdrawal on SOPA & PIPA, and they will be, then they will do what they always do. Strip out portions of the sopa/pipa and insert those orphaned pieces of legislation into another bill during committee - Then they trot the bastard bill out for an up or down vote.

In other words, portions of pipa/sopa legislation get passed but they are hidden in farm subsidy or interstate highway construction funding legislation.

What can Americans do? Stop returning politicians to offices they have held for 15-30 years. They aren't special nor better than any one of us. Kick them outta office. Now.

Leftists in California get rid of Boxer, Pelosi and Feinstein.
Rightist in Ohio get rid of Boehner, Chabot and Gillmor.

Last I heard they were going to transplant bits and pieces into a bill that's titled something like Protecting Children from Internet Paedophiles. You can't really protest a bill named like that, they'll just bury your arguments under a mountain of mud.

They tried the same here in Germany, but surprisingly people did protest against it and it didn't pass.

Ironically enough it was the liberal party that introduced this bill in the first place. They also did awesome other things which led to them plumetting from 15% to 2% of the votes within 3 years of being in the government coalition. This is more for Jorb ;)

At the same time the Pirate Party rose from nothing to 6% and will most likely be in parliament after the next election.
