Another thing most new players do: don't leave enough room inside the palisade. At a minimum you should make it 40x40. I like to go upwards of 80x80 or bigger myself. It not only gives you room to expand for things like trees and improving buildings like kilns and smelters, but gives you room if you make some friends to give a place to stay.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I kept this in mind when i built mine, i was thinking just basic things like kiln, oven, farming area etc
I got really lucky with the well, i checked for a water source after i finished the palisade. I also didnt want to build it too big because it might attract attention, il add some screen shots.

Screen shot added ^^

EDIT- I also have the idea of expanding the claim but not the pali(i cant i sealed it lol) so i plan to expand east build another pali for livestock and trees. One thing ive seen is raids on places mainly for livestock, so if an experienced player comes along and spots it they might just raid the livestock pali instead of the area ive built now.

That is totally ok since you are adding useful content with your posts and not doing it for the postcount only.

Nice story btw, I always enjoy such diaries and we could use more of them. Early game in HnH is still awesome and tons of fun and such threads remind me of that :)

Yeah this is fantastic :).

Are you going to build a village idol at all? They are useful for other things apart from trading, for example lumber gathering is much easier with your HF at the lumber and a village idol you can port to. I understand that you do not want to do idol trading, but you can of course make voyages to traders and give them an outside crossroads sign to you, if you have a village idol.

Also with an idol it is harder for a large village to take over your hermitage (with only a pclaim they can just declaim it).

Are you anywhere near your previous location when you were with hazzor and btaylor btw? PM me if so :).

Sounds tempting, but i think its best to do that later when im more experienced.
The thing that really puts me off is the bright big red skull on the map, asking to get raided.

Well, if you're in the middle of nowhere as you put it, it's not too bad of an idea.

i kinda see what you mean, but whether pclaim or vclaim, it will be seen anyways, unless you go nomadic and do not farm.
if you can afford time for metals, crossroad makes it safer for you to travel in and out without key alts, which gives you a compensatory enough advantages, imo.
