Jorb made the announcement in the middle of a thread regarding a custom client's auto-hearth feature. After auto-hearthing was included in an Ender client update, this measure was taken to ensure that the game wasn't too broken. ;)

Interestingly, the timer ended up breaking the auto-hearth feature in a much more severe way. Before the timer, when a person had auto-hearth enabled, his hearthling would hearth the instant an unknown character was detected. After the timer, this still applied... but the client would continuously scan for unknowns, and would keep restarting the hearth process. This action of hearthing, of course, stops all other actions being undertaken by the character, including movement. I saw three different noobies get killed, simply because their hearthling kept stopping in his tracks.

Just made a test character, it feels more like 3-4 seconds.. and you can't tell if the person standing next to you is hearthing or not. I guess extortion is out the window..

Just that as usual they didn't think it through and broke the game even more instead of fixing it. Autohearthing was one of the few exploits helping the peaceful hearthlings, while 99% of them support the agressive ones. Instead of doing something about those they shifted the balance even further.

Same with the idiotic crossroad "fix". Crossroads never were a problem in the current mechanics, it just looks like that when you have no idea about what they are being used for and how. It is hearthfires, statues, banners and teleport causing problems, but certainly not crossroads. By making them more expensive they fucked over small towns, while it chnages exactly nothing for big ones.

Hmm. What if I'm on a boat and I meet someone on a boat and he starts to hearth. Can I shoot him in the face? I can't remember.

And does anyone have a link to a topic or post explaining this change?
You can aggro them which prevents them from hearthing, as some dudes from Dis did to my "babby" alt the other day in our ~30 min boat chase .

So when/why was it changed to 3-4 seconds :(

10 would be perfect. Or even better no teleport at all.

For the record I am not planning to kill anyone and am too casual to do so if I tried. But I hate how the world feels otherwise real/complete/dangerous and this one thing makes it ridiculous.

It was 10 for like 2 days or so. It was way too much, really..
Hope you have a great day
