Well the reason maybe metal coins worked in w3 was because mines were different then? So to newbies metal was quite inaccessible to start off.
Same could be said for gold now, I suppose. So it would be the larger economies in game that would (jointly) control the currency, if gold coins were adopted.
When you consider that Dis/Ainran found a 57 bar (5700 coins!) node (and thats just one node, of course their bot miners have found plenty I'm sure

), and they clearly don't know what to do with it, it might be worthwhile for them to introduce it as a currency at their trading center, to help consume it.
