Good choice! Some people find that the VS IDE is a bit cumbersome and like to stick to emacs and vi, though....

Some people say cucumbers taste better pickled...

I'd suggest you start with a premade engine or modding a game you enjoy already. Nothing can bog down someone trying to be creative than reinventing the wheel. Unity(http://unity3d.com/)is something to start with, or something like XNA( http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23714) if you want to get more into making an engine.

Try going to your regional Microsoft site if outside the US. There are some restrictions on the Express versions of the Visual Studio suites. Side note: C# is needed to do anything with XNA and publish to XBox Live Arcade. ;)

Will have to recommend XNA for people. Its actually quite simple and has great documentation at hand, really handy for people who want to start out and learn. If people are actually interested in it I can recommend a few good sites and online books, just need to ask o=. For now I'll just leave this here incase: http://rbwhitaker.wikidot.com/xna-tutorials

- Learn how to organize. On paper and mentally. (Your going to need it if your goal it to write game programs. And its tremendously useful for a lot more ...)
- Find a 'good' programming school. And study/practice like hell. Period. (Java and C/C++/etc)

I'm of the opinion that there is no "good" programming school until you get to graduate studies. Everything taught at a typical undergrad can be learned before you're out of high school/prep school. (I'll stop here before I go into a rant about how the educational systems are really failing the potentially great minds of the modern world.)

Also, don't expect truly learning how to program to be fast. http://norvig.com/21-days.html

1. Learn one good programming language. C++, Java, C# (use one language that has good game engines already written so you don't need to reinvent wheel)
2. Find good game engine (framework) that will do some job instead of you. (For Java you can use Slick2D or libGDX for android, for C# you have powerfull XNA, and C++ has good SDL).
3. Learn to use that engine (framework).
4. Write some prototypes and get used to know how original game works.
5. Ask devs or someone to let you use their or draw new graphics
6. Write actual game.
7. Profit ???
