doooo eeeet!!! One of the best indie games on the net (next to Dwarf Fortress that is).
OP: If you're doing single player games, why you no include Dwarf Fortress?
http://bay12games.com/dwarves/ If you don't like the ANSI graphics, there are several 8/16-bit graphics packs that you can install with it. The company motto is "Losing is !!FUN!!"
Also, no other MMO needs to be mentioned other than EVE. All the rest pale in comparison to the awesomeness that is EVE. I wouldn't have ever even touched HnH if my shit-tastic computer could run the latest client. You might note that the game, while subscription based, can be played for free in perpetuity through buying and selling PLEX (game time codes tradable on the market in game). It shouldn't take you more than 2-3 months to get enough earning power to do so.
Along the vein of EVE, another small eastern European developed game deserves mention:
Perpetuum Online. Instead of spaceships, it's sentient robots. One of the major critic points is that many of the interface designs plays out much like EVE. Some of the core game mechanics are similar, too. However, the games start differing from there, and it really is its own game with a development plan that will make it quite different over the long run. It is purely subscription right now, though, and $10 US a month if I recall right. There is a trial available.
In development: World of Darkness. Little has come out of the labs from CCP or White Wolf, though, on it, other than it is in development (and has been for the last 4-5 years now). They have clearly stated that they want this to be open-world PvP sandbox. (FYI, think it's also offering permadeath. Don't quote me on that, though.)
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.
