It does run, IDK if oficial servers (those I dont play from long time) but a real lot of free servers for sure, PvP, family shards, adult shards, and all the different servers with their own characteristics you can imagine. There are out there a lot of people that still think that it is the father of all MMORPG and every now and then come back to it for some time.

yes! Dwarf fortress is exactly a one great game. I had a hours of fun with it!
It does not have a specified goal, but the main objective is to create a prospering dwarf community, city and at last.. A nation.
With all those busy little dwarfs.. taking care of the task i had assigned.. It is just wonderful, they are like ants.

There's games similar to Dwarf fortress too, if you find it too hard.

Goblin camp... A dwarf fortress, but with goblins!
Towns... A dwarf fortress-like but with humans!
Galaxy55... A minecraft-like but only in the outer space with aliens and spaceships and strange ores and stuff..

UOGamers Hybrid is what you should check out if you want to play FREE Ultima Online, with PvP in mind. The Hybrid servers are the most populated with ~500-1000 ppl online at anytime. I have several characters on that shard, but I quit playing Ultima Online completely once I found this game lol. But yeah UO is still a great adrenaline pumping game.

I had found Goblin camp. I've had fun with it, but it's still really buggy. The guy is releasing updates slowly, though, and it's MUCH simpler than DF. Now if there was only an elf based game.... :P

As a note, there's a Dwarf Fortress thread here. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=26927

UnReal World is very much along the same lines as HnH, but single player and focussed on providing an iron age simulation. I've played it on and off for years and it is still under active development. Much respect for the good people working on it.

EDIT: Actually, after learning that you have to actually buy gold with RL money and there is absolutely no pvp, fuck that game.
