Loft made a master piece in Haven and now he is trying to rework the game in a different way in Salem. Issue with Salem is its to much alike haven and its simply being overshadowed by his old work. I think the core mechanics in Salem wont even measure up and no matter how much content added into the game it wont ever make it better. The game lacks those golden nuggets that really draws people to a PC game. Not looking at the graphics and all the game seriously lacks any clear direction. Every mechanic in Salem is broken. Its as if Loft was trying to make a better Haven and just ended up with something completely broken.
I don't want to rip the game in half but Salem just comes of as one of those movies where they put all there heart and sole into the first one then just end up coming up with garbage they cooked up half assed in the backseat of some limo in the coming 2nd, 3rd and ongoing followups.
Because it is.
They ripped off some of the images from their own game and pasted it into Salem to save time.
Maybe with some of the codes too, but modified to work in a 3 dimensional setting.
In a sense they took Hnh and overwrited Salem on top of it, while removing the stuff that they can't use or don't have time to implement.
Had they actually create a engine and everything from scratch,it'll take them another whole year before a beta would come.
But then again, they'd at least improve the 3d graphics and such... I have no idea why Salem needs that sort of art style... It's both creepy and unusual taste for most.
Gothic 'proportionate' characters works well anyhow, or a Gothic 2d artstyle would have done it justice the most.
EDIT: OMG the most unique style for a survival mmo...
Castlevania gothic art style with the same theme of monsters and horror...
Except you aren't Belmonts or someone with magical talents or deep history, you are simply humans trying to survive day by day from these horrors...
edit: images are too huge lol!
http://designingquests.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/castlevania1.jpgNo not imagined in 3d, but 2d like castlevania, but on a isometric or platformer levels...
Might need to re-imagine how gameplay works on a platformer for a mmo, but generally you can make use of 'doors' and passage that links between maps, and increase it to a large near infinite level.
So far on the internet, I've haven't seen people create a platformer on a mmo, focusing on survival and adventure, based like the fighting platformers with 'entrances'... Like castle crashers?
I mean, grid/map based survival zombie shooters from top down is one thing, but I haven't seen a 'lone survivor' kind of mmo...
If you wonder what it's like, it's a indie game:
