It really depends on when you get around to get 3.9.

Well, that's precisely the thing; 3.9 is already up to rc6, and few kernel version have required more than 7 or 8 to be released, so I wouldn't think it's long until I can get it.

Either way, I think the lag should've gotten better by me having put the minimap region files on tmpfs.

wouldn't it still be the reason theres like 420 ppl loading the mini-map at the same time?

The lag isn't that bad, but if killing the minimap helps then I'm for killing it until it can properly be fixed. I'm sure most players use custom clients with a self-mapping thingy anyway.

the mini-map rendering for like the trees and terrain types and houses and stuff for each player is bogging the server a bit thus making lag because I guess the mini-map loading/saving for the detail mini-map is server side
