Bullshit. 'GIF' stands for 'Graphics Interchange Format'. 'Graphics' is pronounced with a hard G, therefore so is the acronym.
I find your lack of face disturbing...

so please tell me, how many of you were pronouncing it "jif" correctly? i had always thought it to be "gift without t" :(
(yes, kaios, sorry i stole your explanation!)

p.s.
i hear swedish call it "yif" (thanks nicole, one ramen burger for you!)

Always called it "jif", the hard g sounds weird and wrong.

lol thats why some people tell the creator to fuck off :P

which actually makes me wonder.
how do you all pronounce "RAID"? (Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks)
i was reading it as "raid" [ei] as in "paid", but Array's A is a schwa (the upside down e in IPA [ə]).
if many people think GIF should be with hard g because of the original word graphics, should "RAID" be pronounced as [əi] or maybe [ai] of "ride" instead of [ei] "raid"? (i know [əi] cannot happen with a diphthong, but just trying to make it consistent.)

'CEM - Combined Effects Munition' should be pronounced like "chem" of chemistry, while 'CEP - Circular Error Probable' should be pronounced as "except" cep?

for what i know, in italian is:
When you have a word (that is a mix of words), you read it as u see it. So C.E.R.N. is Cern. No weird pronuncion, no matter the original words that create it.

BUT
In english the rule is reversed. You don't have to read the word like if is a word. you pronunce the single letters. So it's:
C.E.R.N. = Ci Ei Er En
G.I.F = Gh Ei Ef

prolly how i'm writing it won't sound good for you (I HATE U! LATIN IS THE ONLY TRUE LANGUAGE! *add here shitty complaining etc*), but anyway the english rule say that you can't read it like a normal world. You have to spell it, letter by letter.

So both Jif and Gif are WRONG because you should say G... I... F... XD So, probably, the creator own the truth 'cuz he decides.
(or maibe, american rules are differents?)
