I started out in world 4, but it didn't last a lot.

Then came world 5, now, these where my times, somehow I managed to survive most of the game with the same char (after a few initial deaths before I got ender), and I was never assaulted or robbed. On the contrary, I was quite friendly to many locals Villages and their members taught me many ropes of this game. It was quite sad later, after many months and nuked grids, when everyone around left, it became just me in a world of ruins.
I have a lot of nostalgia for those times :>

I still remember my beginnings in W2 with the very wonderful village of Swampcrazed. I forgot the person's name but they taught me everything I needed to know to get started, the rest was history. If only they could see me now.

Hahaha... I guess I can say it now.

I used to be a part of Swampcrazed too, and I was always stealing shit from them.

Made me sad the day they walled it up. It was such a good spot to loot.

I miss Constantinople. Sure it had a whole bunch of problems but you could go there and trade and feel safe. It had the added benefit that every small trader wanted access to it but often lacked the ability to teleport to it (w3 was 9x9 SG if I remember correctly and not everyone had the hundreds of agi necessary to make a multi-SG hop) and so they would work through small trade hubs to move their goods and get what they wanted.

I also miss that really crazed Russian guy who lived north of me in w3 who had like 50 cupboards full of tin that he wanted to trade for my copper. That was a beautiful day.

So, what changed? Why are we not experiencing the world you oldies are describing? Why is the feel of the game so different?

It's a lot harder to punish perpetrators and even if it can be done, the sting of permadeath removed via alt factories may consequences a lot less significant thus allowing more YOLO players

I shot at Jorb with my Rbow and called him a nigger, took me a day to heal all that SHP back when he ko'd me.

One thing I really liked about world 3, was even if you couldn't travel directly to 'nople, you could always find some independent towns along the way to trade crossroads with, and jump along to it. There were many more open and "public" independent factions back then, which was nice. Before everything got so SRSBIZNIS and certain huge factions decided they wanted to dominate everywhere.
