I've tried this. I've had dogs my whole life but cats are different :/

If you go to put their head down into it they simply twist and push back and they don't take notice of it as if I were just doing it for funsies

Is the cat peeing everywhere or marking its territory? There's a huge difference in what you need to do to get them to stop. There's a guy on the Discovery channel named Jackson Galaxy with a show called "My Cat from Hell" (Animal Planet to be exact) that does cat psychology stuff (the dog whisperer thing) and has a lot of helpful advice. He's got a blog, books, and seems like a forum and stuff for help with cats. You can't train cats like you do dogs. With dogs, negative stimuli can be just as effective as positive reinforcement when used properly. Cats don't respond to negative at all other than getting more obnoxious.

My cat was crapping and pissing everywhere. It was because we had left her home for two weeks during a vacation. It ended up both psychological and physical. She had overeaten so much out of whatever trauma you classify it as (abandonment?) she put on 5 pounds in a month and couldn't climb the stairs to the litter box. I tried to get Mom (yes, I'm stuck at living with my mother because I can't find a damn job) to put her up in a kennel while we were gone, but nope, too expensive... cheaper than the carpet, though. Anyway, to resolve the issue, I moved her full time into the basement and put her on a diet. I also changed litters (the corn cob litter I was using was too thin for her weight and she was sinking into it, so went back to a clay clumping litter). She has since shed most of the weight and has quit using the floor at all (and I'm horrible about keeping the box cleaned out).

If your cat is one of those that has to have a clean box every time they go, there are automated scoops that will work with clumping litters to scoop out feces and urine clumps. They run around $80 US and have special sized disposal bags available for the remains to go in. They need to be washed with soap and water every couple of weeks and have the sacks emptied every few days to once a week (depends on number of cats and how much the eat/drink).

I don't know much about the difference between piss and spray in cats, since the things she pisses on are usually clothes or absorbent materials(god damnit) it's hard to tell if there's blood or anything involved with illness. They do tend to shit and piss on the floor if the litter isn't clean, which is why we now have 2. But it's always my things :(

Lock them in a room with the litter boxes and cat food when you're gone (small room pref.)
and then keep the litter box in that room.

do you put them in the litter box after you whipe their faces in their pee?

When they mark, it has a much stronger odor than typical urine. It's not unusual to have a cat do it to one person's belongings, especially clothes.

If it is territorial marking, it can be a wide variety of reasons from feeling threatened to some sense of competing for resources. For that, you'd have to figure out how the cat sees you and if your a threat, competition, or other problem. Rubbing their nose in it in these cases doesn't work, as it isn't the case of them not knowing where the litter box is.

And here's Jackson's website and blog: http://jacksongalaxy.com/

Here's a page with several posts on the matter of spraying: http://jacksongalaxy.com/category/cat-b ... -and-care/

Well it's definitely a strong smell. Like musky old gym shorts :x
I don't think I'm a threat to this cat though, the thing loves me more than my girlfriend

Cats can be extremely fussy, mine will not use her litter tray more than once, even if it's just a dribble, so if I haven't noticed she will pee elsewhere, mostly under my bed, grrr.

She also stopped using it after she had been scared by a loud bang outside whilst she was in mid-flow, I eventually worked out to move it into another position, but it still took her awhile to go back to it.
Spraying is different, it's used to mark territory, you can usually tell by the smell, spraying is much stronger and lingers, maybe the cat is spraying your stuff because you are the new addition and it feels threatened.

In order to stop mine peeing elsewhere after she was frightened I had to resort to shutting her in the room with the litter tray after her meals until she had used it. Everytime she did use it I praised her lots and gave her a treat, I also banned her from my bedroom until she was back to using it properly.

Mine has access to outside, but she won't go out if it's raining or cold, or if something has scared her, she's very timid despite being quite aggressive. It is hard to get cats to adapt to certain behaviour patterns as they are not as eager to please you as dogs are, but it is possible with perseverance.

If it is spraying there are products you can buy on the market to disuade them, but you will need to apply it to the things they spray on, i.e. your stuff, lol.

Anyway, good luck!
