i have also played H&H since 2009 and had loong brakes now and then , one of the brakes i had was by testing Salem im not sure for how loong i actually played salem but i would guess almost a year since we played it before the release. i stopped playing it quite some time ago now though.
i like both Salem and H&H, but as pothje said Salem lack a lot of content have flaws in some major game mechanics and there is not much of an end game wich makes it impossible to keep playing it in the loong run.
i belive the biggest misstake was to release Salem to soon in my oppinion and probably many others share it. Salem was a loong way from beeing finished when it was released wich i belive lead it to its downfall. Usually you only get one shot in the gaming world with a new game release, and the produkt better be next to flawless when it comes to content and game play mechanics by that time, simple bugs and the sort are often more accepted by the gaming crowd because most games have a lot of mini buggs in the beginning. But they are really ruthless when it comes to content and game mechanics it just has to be there, if they dont like that part and stop playing because of it, they will most likley never come back, even if changes are made to the game afterwoods. it is a classic misstake that lead many games to its grave and many other types of service companies to for that matter.
i mean if you get a dish that makes you puke at a restaurant, it is most likley you will have a bad assosiation to that particular restaurant and you will most likley never ever come back to it, even if they make changes to the better, there are so many other restaurants to shoose from.
so that is where Salem lies today it probably still lacks a lot of content and such but most of all it lacks a lot of players so to start playing it now makes you probably feel like you are in a ghost world after a wile sort of and most people will end up quitting after a wile once they have done the first content and built their infrastrukturea and all that, here comes booredom......quit

H&H is still in alfa stage hence also lacks a lot of things and have faulty game mechanics, we are basically the game testers even tho it seems the devs are not listening that much to us anymore but that might be due to the fact most things have allready been adressed at some point and are just beeing repeated over and over.
With that said H&H still contains a lot more then Salem so i would recommend it if you are stubborn, have a LOT of patience and a lot of time to play. there are a lot of others playing so you can choose if you wanna be a hermit or if you wanna join a bigger village and choose your play style after that. however the world is dangerous so beeing paranoid is a normal state of mind in H&H ohh yea and dont fully trust anyone in this game, anyone can backstab you, and some will because thats how they play and their goal is to get your little skull from your lifeless body and study it for their own benefit. Security is priority nr1 always.
if you just want a nice and different experience, and enjoy the first part of the game, put in hard work building up some infrastruktures and stuff, well until you get to the end when there is nothing left to do and you get boored with the lack of other players and you finally quit, then you can go with Salem. ya ok there is some danger in Salem to, if you actually do meet another player ingame outside of the major starting area they can murder you wich probably is one of the few things that you can actually die from. however with the lack of people playing you might also go thru the entire game without ever meeeting anyone outside of the starting city. if you live far away from it.
Whatever you choose, good luck
