That's kinda unfortunate. It'd be nice to get a new playing field but I guess that's out.

Does Hafen have a dev blog or anything yet?

What we know so far are bits and pieces. There is a screen shot in Announcements called The ghost of Christmas Future. There is no developer blog beyond that.

Due to the unknown time frame of Hafen's release the devs have been avoiding releasing too much information to prevent the hype meter from getting too high. The last thing that they want is to build up our hopes just to dash them. When the game's engine is done we'll be getting another alpha game that isn't quite up to speed with where Haven is yet. Over time development will bring us to Haven levels and beyond but until then we'll be experiencing problems similar to where we were in w1. Expect lag, bugs, and other general nonsense in much higher quantities than Haven when Hafen is finally released. =)

It's Haven 2.0 or Haven 2, Not Hafen. They've clearly stated this.

Waiting for world resets just so you can start in early world and still fail miserably while wasting time to compete against power gamers as casual is stupid.
Joining in late world doesn't mean that you're going to get steamrolled by super powers in 2 seconds. It's only a little bit harder to find a quiet or not too crowded place, but getting high quality shits is only easier once you can trade because most people have everything you can trade.
I am pretty sure these things were stated in every "world reset when?" thread.

Unless you're a powergamer seeking the nodes, in which case not starting at world start renders you crippled until the world ends.

HnH history knows examples of powerful factions joining late. They did fine. Average node changes it's owner few times per world, because people quit, getting backstabbed, forget to take care of authority, etc.

Pretty much as Dzedajus says, if you're a casual player then the late game is better for you than the early game. The early game is full of bitter wars and constant raiding for land and highly sought after spots. Quality is low, resources are scarce, and everyone will steal your damn rabbit skins. By late game you can trade for high quality materials fast and play catchup quick with a bit of effort. Most villages aren't actively seeking conflict and raiders will only harass you if you leave scents or are too close to their base.

The huge downside to the late game is that it's quiet in terms of politics. This has no effect on new players anyway but it seems to bother people a lot when factions aren't trying to kill each other outside of their doorstep.

Unless you're a large faction full of power gamers, you weren't going to keep up in the early game anyway. =)

There is also the problem with the server population being much, much, lower in the late game because the majority of players have been bored to tears with the repetition of Haven's endgame!

That's a problem nearly every game faces when you have chewed through the bulk of the content and have hit something of a quality grind. Haven is no exception and, being honest here, you get ~3 months of quality content where the game offers you things to do. After that players are meant to entertain one another with politics, conflict, trade, etc. The issue being that we have very little reason to go to war constantly or other such dangerous efforts so that doesn't happen. By design the majority of players hole up in forts and never see the light of day. This reduces political tension, expansion, and other such things that should be happening.

As the game is, it will always see a large drop off of players for a myriad of reasons. Some are inevitable -- some players quit when they realize that they aren't going to be top dog whether or not they ever stood a chance. Other players will quit because they joined the world by so much as an hour late (you think I'm joking but w4 was full of these people) and felt that everyone had a huge advantage on them that they could never compete with. Then the rest leave when they have chewed through the content of the game that is accessible to them.

Oh, that reminds me a sweet thread full of drama in early w5. People were seriously complaining about Sodom getting some gold, because they really thought, that having RoBs that early will give them a huge advantage. Thread was about 30 pages long. And those weren't some random noobs, among these people were the strongest players of HnH history. Iirc this story was one of the main reasons for some experienced players to quit.
