Increase both survival and exploration up to 25.
This will allow you to find better curios and forageables aswell as increasing their quality (which is capped by your survival).
Try to find carrots from wild windsown weeds, then you can start to farm them for perception food. They grow really fast and if you have maxed nature you won't have to worry about food anymore.

Rabbit allows you to build your first saw, which is a great advance early on.
A common trick is to walk right next to the rabbit and only then right click on it. This way it won't run away.

You have a multicolored FEP (food event point) bar on your character sheet. When you eat food you put various points in it (varies by food item), represented by different colors. When you fill up the bar you get a point in a stat, which one you get is random and the chance for any specific stat is equal to the percentage of the FEP bar filled by that stats points. The number of points required to fill a bar is equal to your highest stat, and you can reduce this number by eating different foods.

For regaining health, you can use leeches or gauze. Leeches are easy to get, just walk through a swamp with empty equipment slots, and they'll attach themselves to these slots. They drain your soft HP for a chance to restore your hard HP. Your soft HP slowly fills up to your hard HP as long as you're well fed(it drains hunger while doing this). Do note that if leeches drain all your soft HP they'll KO you and start draining your hard HP, and can even kill you if you're at low hard HP, so make sure your soft HP is filled up before applying leeches.

Combat is a bit complicated but I'll give you a quick break down: There is no luck involved just raw numbers.
You and your opponent have an attack bar (red) and a defense bar (blue). When you attack, such as with a punch, you use up all of your attack bar to try to break their defense bar. Lets say you have 10 Unarmed Combat and punch an opponent. If you have a full red bar (100%) then you will do 10 damage to their blue bar. If you have a half full red bar (50%) then you will only do 5 damage to their blue bar. If an attack breaks their blue bar, you deal damage instead of missing. For example, lets say your opponent has 5 Defense and you have 10 Unarmed Combat. You punch them and break their defense with 50% of your attack, so you deal 50% of your damage to their health.

If you're interested (don't worry if you're not) here's the formula for the damage you'd do in this instance: [0.75 * 50 * sqrt(Strength / 10)]/2

There are other numbers and junk but lets focus on your survival and growth rather than on combat.

Boars, Bears, and Deer will wreck you right now. There are ways for you to get around this, such as ranged combat, twitch hunting, or utilizing shallow water but once again we're getting ahead of ourselves. The key to growth isn't taking down big game, it's exploring. Walk around, look at stuff, and then walk around a whole bunch more. Get lost, find weird things, discover those weird things, and then skin and consume those weird things. Different terrain types offer different obstacles and rewards. For example, on grasslands, which are big open bright green grassy areas, you can find aurochsen and chickens. If you're brave and don't mind risking your life you can pluck hair from aurochs for a tasty curiosity. You can also just pick up chickens and rabbits without killing them, wring their necks, and carve up your prize.

combat:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=30421 (tailored for pvp but you'll get the gist of how it works for pve)

twitch hunting:
Ninijutsu wrote:Aggro an animal from a boat, parked close to shallow water but not touching land. When it walks to the edge of land, it will stand there for several seconds. Periodically, it will make another attempt to find a path to you, during which it will "twitch" in your direction for a split second, and then stop again for several seconds. While it is stopped, and not attempting to path, you can (if at the shore) get out of your boat, use an ability on it, and then retreat back to your boat without fear of retaliation. Rinse and repeat, using one ability on it after each twitch, and you can kill it with very low stats.

More specifically, the abilities you will use are Call Down the Thunder (until you have 26 IP), opportunity knocks (4 times), and Valorous Strike. If your valorous strikes are hitting for way too little damage (like 50), you might want to gain an extra 15 IP to spend on 5 Invocation of Skuld's for 5 advantage (and then use Sting instead, so you don't reset advantage(or just regain the advantage after each valorous strike if you STILL aren't hitting hard enough, as valorous strike uses more weight)).

Also, feel free to fan the flames twice before calling down thunder to speed up the process.

I think I understand the combat. Do you happen to know what the defense stats are for various animals, because I can't even kill toads or ants.

So I guess now I just study objects until I have enough LP to increase my EXP? OK, thanks for all the help. :D

Going off of memory here but I think ants have something like 8 or 10? Though tip, rather than fighting the ants to raid their nest, raid and run. You probably won't be able to get the loot in the first try, so use the fact that they're aggro'd to you to lure the ants away and then snags the prize.

You need roughly 10 UA to fight ants, 40 to fight a fox, 100 to fight a boar, 150 to fight a deer, and 250 to fight a bear (head-on). With twitch hunting you need a fraction of the normal stats, just enough to hit through a few points of defense with your full weight (weapon attack (MC) preferred) and do reasonable damage.

For fighting head-on, if you are having trouble but have the correct UA, just spam Float Like a Butterfly at the beginning of the fight for advantage until you feel comfortable. Max is 5, and this will effectively double your stats during the fight. You can also do this to fight tougher animals head-on with lower than recommended UA, but be very careful.

I think I will be peaceful for now. I have an ant queen/empress that I'm currently studying, I hope that will give a lot of LP. How can I find a village to join? Everyone near me is inactive.

For more LP, make sure your adjusting your personal belief slider "martial/peaceful" toward peaceful, get up your exploration/perception to find forageable curios, get intelligence up to study more, keep spamming cone cows when you're online, and get wheat for straw dolls.

Ant Queen is worth base 500lp and Ant Empress is worth base 2000lp. Base is assuming they're quality 10.
