I preferred the first one. X-Com: UFO Defense. Wonder if it's on there as my copy is on 3.5 floppy, and i'm sure they're no good at this point.

Not at archive.org - but at Steam (single game or Xcom pack)

For you TES fanbois, the first two, Arena and Daggerfall, have been free downloads from the TES site since about six months before ESO launched.

More than a few of the mentioned games have been seen on different sites and not been picked up from the "abandonware" state. I recall XCOM getting pulled off those when Firaxis picked up the rights to the game, and I'm sure why it's not on here. Most of these fall under that category. I've seen a couple listed here that I've found out have been acquired and up for sale after trying to find the authentication information to actually be able to play.

And yes, this is just a Flash interface for DOSBox, but it sure beats the headache of configuring and using it for each different game when your computer may choke on something like Sound Blaster emulation. At least with the local you can slow the game down if it's running too fast, though...

Sorry for the inconvenience. I just listed these games as dos gems from my memory and a glance over abandonia without checking if they're available for download (but then again this is the internet and if someone really wants to play he will find a way). Makes sense that some of them are still sold or have been considered good enough to turn in a profit again through new sales and distribution methods.

I should probably also mention that Emperor of the Fading Suns does not work with DosBox. It's possible to make it work with a mod however. I'd suggest to just scratch it from the list because it's a bit of an effort to get it going. I feel that it's one of those true hidden gems though (a strategy game with a setting reminiscent of Warhammer40k).

I don't know, I never had an issue with setting up games in DosBox. Maybe I was just lucky with the hardware. Setting a game up in the DosBox console is indeed a bit nasty but it has always worked for me to simply drag the file that executes a game on top of the file that executes DosBox and then turning the cycles up with ctrl + F12 until it runs smoothly. The emulator picks the right options to make it work automatically.

i recommend using Virtual Box because of DX 3 gets installed (not compatibility mode on later Windows)

prolly one of the best diplomatic systems seen in a game
