Seems to me your missing the real issue, but that's ok.

Problem are not to be solved in advanced. It would be a real problem is they where.
No more problems, that would be way to boring.

Not saying that there isn't a real issue, but if there is, I sure can't tell it from those articles. They read to me like the kind of articles that say "The government has been hacked!" when the FBI's homepage has been defaced. :)

the only real issue is that they identified the "HDD reprogramming firmware module on "very few targets" only
and writing "Overall, the plugin uses a lot of undocumented, vendor-specific ATA commands" as if you can't get a hold of that "undocumented" serial ATA commands ...

Tempted to go check for myself, but don't care until OP delivers on some more information.
