Actually, it is a "unintended connection with truth" (*http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony) It is unintended the village of Moria in H&H has been abandoned, just like the "truth" in Lord of the Rings.

Selective quoting. Wiki (hardly the best source) defines situational irony (this particular case) as "a discrepancy between the expected result and actual results." Exactly what I said. Irony requires incongruity. In the classical sense of irony, this leads to truth but this isn't a Greek play.

There is no need to use irony for these situations when there is already a perfectly good word for that, which is "coincidence."
