The reset was mentioned by jorb in Game Development: Combat System.

Its a criminal scent! You can only see those if you have good enough Exploration/Perception , it will be rolled against the criminals (the one who left the scents) Stealth/Intellect, so sometimes you need to walk away and come back several times or enter and leave a house to make a new roll, eventually you might be able to see the scent that is there.

It's an attack scent.
