Just a word in defense of morals -- you may want to make sure that they actually stole stuff (rather than just looking around) before you murder them. Just sayin'. :)

You NEED the theft skill to generate a theft scent.

Nope, just looking in a container currently only requires trespassing, and generates theft scents. It will be fixed, but my current inventory implementation doesn't support it.
