Ah... that explains it!

If someone abandon the game, the server automagically detects the player's state of mind and removes the claim!

Map hasnt been up for long. A claimed mine is probably not abandoned, although it might well be being kept in reserve for a bit. If it was surrounded by a decayed palisade and chewed up pavement, then maybe. But as it stands, that doesnt sound much like an abandoned mine.

I've found a mine with a small claim, no palisade, nothing. I check it sometimes and see no signs of activity. Don't understand why someone would do something like that.

Better? We ourselves have several unused mines atm, who knows if we need them later or might wanna sell them.

They probably have a central base with good smelters and what not and are porting the ore back to it. As long as they keep tabs on it, there is a fair chance that no one will be able to build a village to remove it very soon, and later they can build an alt village on it. At that point they dont need a palisade much, its not like tresspassers will deplete the mine, and they can always track them. Or they could build palisade/walls. Its a question of how best to use a limited resource, in this case time.
Edit -- thanks for the highlight, Burg :)

The less people that have access to mines, the better your bartering position.

If you find a mine, build it, claim it (optionally protect it) and go looking for other mines. You can then sell it for exorbitant amount of whatever, exploit it when you get a full industry character, or just basically grief the whole world of a mine, the possibilities are endless!

You got it!

I am suspecting a sarcasm fail. Any chance of that?

Maybe such a case. Should look for some big settlement in the area then.

Meh, I was being realistic with a bit of bitterness/sarcasm mixed in. Probably comes from my being *extremely* lucky and having a cave tin mine.... I'm luckier than most, but 'soft' metals are not much use and it's even more irritating when the guy I trade with controls 6 mines, 3 of them iron.

I will be considerably happier if something like alternative sources of metal are implemented. See my post in the suggestion: low random chance of getting a random ore when chipping stones/digging for soil/digging for clay or something like that. Horribly bad way of getting metal compared to a mine, but better than none.
