Chances are they would pave every second tile, but switch it around every one hundred paved tiles.

Indeed that will all disappear eventually, what doesn't disappear are the clear-cutting scars we have been finding in our area, apparently one or more newbs just spawned out in the woods and has been wandering around hacking down large swaths of forest and doing nothing with the logs.

I always feel sad when I see those, not for the trees, but because logs are going to waste.

You can always use the logs yourself. Steel making eats wood in massive amounts.

I've seen something like this near a russian settlement too, apparantly they found it funny to plow miles and miles of land.

I wish I could, and I always try to take as many as possible but travelling so far for so long for two logs, isn't worth it :(

It's not even necessarily noobs who do that. I decided to let my explorer character build a bough bed and a house so I could at least let him sleep lying down and last time I logged in with that character all the bloody bough-producing trees around it had been chopped down. And I know I didn't do that. :(
