A player doesn't get over 60 evasion to secretly admire people's junk. He didn't take anything because he was keeping his inventory free for metal. If this is so probable that I might as well accept it as the truth, why wait until I lose metal? At least hunting a genuine thief will bring me more satisfaction than stifling the hordes of the Altpocalypse.

You're right; it is a lot of trouble for a small thing. But the Hearthlands are driven by emergent gameplay, so why can't vengeance be my motivation in the same way wealth and industry motivate others?

...btw.. is that a crime?
i know it is game-wise cause lothar hasnt completed the thieveing mechanic.. but... socially? is that really anything more then rude?

Note: My understanding of law is very much layman's, and very much Texan.

Technically, it's trespassing. Probably akin to breaking and entering, too. I don't know the severity of those crimes in real life, but it's disturbing in that it usually means your place is being scoped and your security bypassed. Which is technically applicable to H&H too - this is why I flipped out when I saw Jorb's stinky footprint on my crucibles. Someone knew I was making steel, had a rough idea of when it would be done, and they might be back for it.

Murdering the perp isn't really justifiable - unless he's wanted for other things - but it would bear investigation.

EDIT:

It just occurred to me - I've got some Bear Salami missing. I imagine it's not the same guy (unless the OP's definition of 'rare sausages' and mine differ somewhat). As a matter of fact, it might have been one of my kin as I allow them to interact with my claim. I suppose I'll find out when I can question everyone.

FURTHER EDIT:

Confirmed I lost that in a crash, so disregard the above edit.

Doesn't being a 'thief' imply ... you know .... actually stealing something?

Maybe you simply moved something around yourself and forgot. That seems much more likely to me.

I'll note that in this game, murder really isn't more than a sentence of however long you spent leveling your character up. If you're comparing it to the legal system, then we have to consider that there really is only one punishment: perma-death. This doesn't mean much though. It probably means a week of grinding. That's all it takes to get out of jail, pay off your fine, or otherwise mitigate your debt to society.

maybe you see your character as merely the sum of your grinding.
I tend to invenst a big more emotion into my character, and when he dies [oh god.. i know he will], i'll be quite upset and not just for the time lost grinding.... and the next character i make will no doubt be completely different personality-wise.

Don't take this a admittance of guilt or anything... i'd probly remember if i rifled through your stuff.. and i don't recall doing it...
but i've wasted a incredibly large amount of LP just on whims...
I have infact, 60 melee skill, just to 'test it out' and have no intention of using it.
In fact if you saw my character sheet, you'd probly say.. wow.. this guy did things pretty much randomly with no effort to specialize other then on whims...

Yeah, I guess I really didn't think about that aspect of it, Rift. I tend to not roleplay my online characters too much. Your character would take a lot more grinding to regain than mine would, though :/ . I guess the most important thing would be to find out who this thief is.

ghghghghg. From everything I've heard, he/she's not a thief. You have to steal something to be a thief. What have they stolen?
