When you say "far back" you mean the room with chests, anvil, candlestick, and two crucibles?
I see 4 theft scents here.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

Well, that would be the room. I could care less if you get my stuff back. Infact, if you do, keep it as a reward.

I checked every scent there, they were all zdazzle's... I even managed to forcesummon him.
And unless the thief has a stealth score of over 55, I'd see his scent, hell, my own stealth skill is 75 and I can still see my own.

These scents right?

Yes, those.
That was the vault.
No one was allowed in except for me.
So if ZDazzle's theft scents are there....
EDIT:
Odd I did notice the Z removed me from his kins list as well.....

Anywho, I left the scents in the wax basket in front of the village idol.
What you do with them now is not my business, unless it's asked to be my business.

Man, that place just can't seem to get a break can it :( Did you guys check for ancient indian burial grounds and other similar curses before settling there?

It's dead and done. I helped keep it up and running for a week, I helped improve the area, but no more. Probably going to move away alone for a bit then find residence in a larger town.

Thing is, that place, like most settlements, wasn't designed from the outset to take theft into serious consideration. After I moved out I reconsidered this very carefully, and I have to say I sleep soundly at night while my steel cooks away. ;-)

A suggestion with your steel.. lock it up underground, sure. Don't think claims are going to keep it perfectly safe. I also wouldn't use my hearthfire as a gate, as you are exposed to being revenge murdered if you ever steal something back etc.

Cart gates are brilliant. Just build a couple of kilns, place a cart on one side, and have your hearthfire inside the secure area. Close the cart gate before you sleep, voila. Line all your tunnels with fires, and then not only do they have to dig through to get around the gate, they also have to wait for the fires to burn down. You can make these as thick as you want.

How is a cart gate secure? Couldn't the thief just move the cart, the same as you do?

Edit: Disregard, I suck.

I now understand cart gates. :P
i guess they never miss huh
