Hell I don't even think the people who are EASILY findable but far away from the ring ever get robbed. Unless there is some form of Higher skill thief communion out in the more uncivilized rings, But all things are generally done by one or two people. Also is alts your excuse. Technically My thief isn't a alt, Its the only character I have. Its just his bloodline carries a proud tradition of partaking in theft.

You're right. Security by Obscurity works for a period of time - we have so far enjoyed great security, not having been ravaged by grievers or thieves at all. But eventually it falters, and people find you, and the grievers show up. I rue the day when grievers arrive in our city.
i guess they never miss huh

Well, I would say that this temporary solution will only be workable as long as buildings are indestructable. Eventually, I'm sure, the dev's will make it so that any building can be destroyed, and with a 'vandalism' skill you can destroy/construct buildings on people's claims.

I only hope that when they implement this it comes with some new anti-thief objects, which, though not indestructible, offer decent protection.

JTG... what the hell has any of that about the ROB got to do with this vault discussion?

IMO, that area is an abandoned wasteland in part because of the lack of code for destroying things, but also in part because of thieves.

You have to realize ferinex. Theres only two or three griefers in the entire game. Security by obscurity WILL work as long as theres still people to take all the collateral damage caused by them near the ring, Or until you get someone determined to get at your place. Its not hard finding places theres roads and signs all over the world. Its just convenience versus desire, And convenience will win out until desire is high. These people aren't stupid, but they are incredibly lazy. As you can see by the clever way someone worked over me and bluehaven earlier. That was clearly planned and I ended up having my one attempt at honest work destroyed by a underlying thief network thats managed to weasel its way into the large settlements. Its sort of neat.

Just thought I should mention, hearthfire vaults aren't 100% secure, kill the owner of the hearth and it turns to a normal unlit fire no? This is a much lager problem for vaults with multiple hearth entrances of course. Then there are the other methods of getting inside, winning peoples trust and betraying them for much profit. These vaults just make theft much harder not impossible.

Having said that, I also think they're as much 'cheating' and abusing the game mechanics as hearth walling, alt exploiters, macro-grinders and other random griefing.

It's a defensive griefing sure, but does that make it ok?

Major towns should have people active and guiding all hours of the day, Yes Vaults are cheating. But the admins wont act on it.

They do all mostly have people on at all hours, which is why vaults bother me.

I think we're all missing a point here. There IS no cheating in this game, the devs have said it themselves numerous times. There is no abuse, no cheating, no nothing. If you find a way around the system then they're going to patch that way up (hopefully). By doing it you're simply pointing out the flaws in their game. If anybody still can't understand, let me draw it out for you.

Devs introduce law and order to counter the thievery that has been going on. Thieves, now being tracked and killed, find a way around this system. What is their way? Alts. Most of them are doing it just to spite their victims because they're unhappy that the game is suddenly turned against them.
What do the victims do to counter the alts? Vaults. They're unhappy that they can't sleep without being robbed. Relocating? Fine, that'll help for a few days until they're found again.
Devs watch and have discussions about new content that'll make things more 'fair'.

It's just a back and forth thing until eventually the two sides are 'balanced'. It may not be perfect but the ways around this balance will be harder to achieve. Nobody is in the right or wrong but some of us are more pitiful than others.

I agree with this 100%. I avoided vaulting for a long time to try to use the current justice system, but it just doesnt work. So, i finally gave up and started using vaults. It might make the game less fun now, but this is an alpna, and both the vaults and the alts are simply highlighting an area of the game that is out of balance for the admins...which is exactly what we are supposed to be doing in an alpha. So really, in a screwy kinda way, the system is working perfectly.
