I am beginning to think that there are gaping holes in the new rollback system. We have reports of lost items and duplicated items.

I for one, lost my boat and contained items. I was mapping and parked my boat in one local map area, moved to the next local area to the east and started mapping. After the rollback was back on the ground recovering from a boar attack that occurred half way through mapping that area (I had logged out to give the boar time to leave). Everything seemed ok until I went back to my parking space (very obvious location near the bottom of the NW quadrant of D3) and discovered the boat was gone.

It is an out of the way location, so I doubt anyone came along and took it. Fortunately there was nothing really valuable in the hold (it will take a day before my replacement stuff can be completed).

Here's exactly what happened to me:

I was also doing some mapping (though not using the in-game Cartography-- I was drawing by hand). Earlier in the day, I had done a bit of general farming, getting honey from beehives and extracting some rustroot. At that time, I had two buckets in my inventory: honey, and some milk. I also had taken out an entire crop of silkworm eggs and placed them on my herbalist table. I put the buckets away before I left.

I then went to do my mapping. I guess I was doing that for about an hour, and then idled for another hour. Sometime during that, the server went down.

When it came back up, I suddenly had those two buckets in my inventory again. When I returned home, I found the original buckets in their wardrobe where I had earlier put them away. They had been duplicated. The silkworm eggs, however, were gone completely: they were neither in the cupboard, or the herbalist table I'd placed them in. Also, the entire carrot patch I had earlier uprooted was back, and the food trough I had filled with carrots was again empty. It was not fun doing all that again. :(

Often side-effect of rollbacks (in any game) is things vanishing or being duplicated.
To put it simple, if the server saves your cupboard containing a bear hide, then you take out the bear hide and put it in a drying frame, then the server saves the drying frame and crashes a bit later... bear hide is saved in two locations (as it didn't re-save the cupboard yet).

At least, that's how I think H&H works.

Yes, that's the problem. Database saves should be designed so that after any save things are consistent. Obviously things accomplished after the time of the last save will be lost (that is the nature of rollbacks); however, if stuff gets duplicated or things are no longer consistant with the state of the world at the last save then there is a fundamental database problem.

I was going to post my thoughts about how stuff worked, but I decided not to because I could be completely wrong and people misreading stuff seems to generate a lot of 'false facts'. Suffice it to say that the game has come a long way since May, when this sort of thing was very common. I think the game uses a weird/non-standard method of doing things because their equipment was comparatively pitiful back then. At some point, loftar changed it. There's been at least one occasion where a weird bug reverted things to the old method and it's possible something like this occurred again.

If you want someone who actually knows what they're talking about to give you the full skinny, I would recommend PMing loftar and asking him to take a look here.
