Kinda like making backup files in DF to create "saved" games... I still feel unclean when I do that

I know that finding a strong enough community is one way to successful repel invaders and that combat and wars are an integral part of the game. What I am saying is that there are many players who are playing for the feeling of pride and ownership of their settlements, and that these players quit when they are attacked because they lose their attachment to their settlement. I am asking the forum to suggest ways that this type of player can maintain that attachment so they don't quit. It doesn't really matter if the player who quits had only a small noobie farm with a lean-to, or if they were part of a great village surrounded by brick walls.
I know plenty of the players here are playing to try to drive other players out of the game, but I am working from the assumption that the devs are not holding an elimination tourney and that encouraging a diversified player base is a good thing.

The pvpers can kill the crap out of eachother and the carebears can care.
Theres always better and worse pvpers, so there should be some challenge for them as well.
