Nawww, man, it's gotta be an internal part of the game. Doing stuff outside of the client just feels dirty.... :P

Kinda like making backup files in DF to create "saved" games... I still feel unclean when I do that

I think it's supposed to be like this.

If you choose to be civilized, and live off land and progress, you should not have a little community of your own.
The peaceful and progressive always have to suffer from the barbaric hand. That's why communities always has been created, and that's why the most organized communities always became the strongest and most fearsome forces in history. (E.g. Greeks, Roman Empire, The feudal powers and the modern Nation State.)
The progression of a civilized society is far more awesome because of several factors.
1) Teamwork (Division and organization of labour)
2) Combined power (Societies teaming up, creating a nation or state)
3) Strenght in numbers (.... explains itself)
4) Development

On the other hand. The predators seem like the stronger kind, at first. But in the end, they are the ones still living in small communities, undeveloped and backwatered because they focus on living off others work.

In the longrun, the teamwork and progress of the more civilized kind wins the game.
And when states in the civilized international community can't stand eachothers anymore, the conflicts between these states makes the barbaric radings seem like a fart in the universe.

I think you are missing my point, Wardozer. I know that finding a strong enough community is one way to successful repel invaders and that combat and wars are an integral part of the game. What I am saying is that there are many players who are playing for the feeling of pride and ownership of their settlements, and that these players quit when they are attacked because they lose their attachment to their settlement. I am asking the forum to suggest ways that this type of player can maintain that attachment so they don't quit. It doesn't really matter if the player who quits had only a small noobie farm with a lean-to, or if they were part of a great village surrounded by brick walls.

I know plenty of the players here are playing to try to drive other players out of the game, but I am working from the assumption that the devs are not holding an elimination tourney and that encouraging a diversified player base is a good thing.

I totally agree with you. Its quite a dilemma though, we cant just take out combat/pvp, it would take away all bigger goals there are.
If you never were to be attacked everyone would have a 'Sodom' in a few months maybe, and then its over.

Imo a good solution *could* be to make two servers: Pvp and non-pvp.
The pvpers can kill the crap out of eachother and the carebears can care.
Theres always better and worse pvpers, so there should be some challenge for them as well.

I think you're missing the point of the game. If you forfeit the safety of a village because of your pride or just because you want to live by yourself, then having lack of safety is the payoff you knowingly pay. Taking that lack of safety from the game will very likely cause a lack of satisfaction of succeeding against the odds.

UO tried that with Felucca/Trammel, but somehow lost it's feeling then. You'd just crank up the "extremism"-slider without really improving the gameplay. With the difference beeing that Non-PvP-Worlds in HaW might get awfully boring, if the only hazards you'd ever face would be boars, bears and leaving the boat on the wrong side.

if you become attached to your pixels to the point that you would quit the game if you lost some of them i'd suggest another game, or perhaps professional counseling. if you think your place looks pretty, great, take a screenshot and cherish your memories forever. most of the fun of this game is the journey, not the destination.

I agree with this part. Its the journey from simplistic pvp mock-up, to pretty interesting and somewhat complex game. Well measured and thought out details get added, boring parts get removed. The journey continues and HH becomes a sophisticated tho a bit harsh masterpiece, who knows when. And it slowly becomes a favorite time killer for all sorts of guys and gals who accept and enjoy masterfully balanced antagonisms in it.
Thats how I see it and what I hope for.

well i meant the journey of the player through his life in game, but the progress of the game over the past 11 months has been quite fun and interesting as well.

I just got raided a while ago by a village called silent hill. They took all my silkoth eggs that i made a few weeks ago. Im rebuilding my place now and took all my items just like you said. Thanks for the advice. :D
They assume safety in the village that they dwell in. There is a predator of the clan who assumes his dominince over all the hearthlings. They try to run away to find safety, but he is to fast. And that is the great cycle of the village clan.
