Link to said thread? I searched but combat is too general to search for :P

The wiki has a 'combat 101' article but nothing links to it unless you actually search 'combat' you won't find it.

I love fighting and since I played melee I actually got a lot more into the game, only problem is that battles take pretty long on both sides.

Also, just adding tooltips to skill son the hotkey bar isn't too hard right? With that alone it would help immensely.

Finding my way around the combat skills can be a real pain because of testing them out in real time, for example when fighting a boar, I killed my first few (Given they were lvl 3 or so) easily, but then I go up against a lvl X fox and get my ass whooped. Although it's not that bad since they tend to walk away after so I can keep practicing and lose nothing more than HHP which is easily healed with a bandage. :P

Anyone mind telling me how sparring works? I didn't want to try it and end up with some bros knocked out. :S

I read the combat 101 article, and it wasn't really any more than I could get from reading loftar's announcement posts.

I was hoping for more of a "use these combos against this creature"
"if you're victim of this combo/sequence from an enemy, here's what you can do to counter it"

Not just discussion of the elements individually

This guide?: http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6518&p=74484#p74484

I hadn't had much PvP experience to do a guide section on the metagame sadly.

On the side note: we're getting a lot of people looking for my guide. I think I will ask Jorb or Loftar to sticky it for best convenience.

Would be nice to get that and the quality thread stickied.

I actually like how complicated the combat system is at first. It takes a good couple hours but you can go from getting your but kicked by mere ants (not one of my prouder moments) to actually killing V foxes in a few hours. Even with shitty stats (I'm <20 melee). It's fun and challenging, at least for now.

If there's a combat guide could someone link me to it? I've tried shooting arrows at a few foxes but I don't know if it does any damage then they immediately gank me :)

Little update on my char; I established a homestead (no claimed land yet, just a spot to level/build, didn't know it was essential to find a mine first hehe) and was lucky enough to find an abandoned village nearby. At least I assume it was abandoned - chickens were dead, ovens and stuff were all too far into disrepair to use, pots were dead on herb table, etc. That yielded up all kinds of seed, some decent cannabis seeds (btw, can I smoke the "hemp" and make my player's happiness go up? It keeps staying in the unhappy, sometimes very unhappy, and according to an experiment I just did smoking cannabis increases happiness in real life (:P). Anyway, I saw a pipe and so I was wondering, because "hemp" really just means cannabis, marijuana was a mexican slang term they brought into the US back in the day when we were trying to convince everyone that it made mexicans and blacks rape white women so ppl would approve criminalization. So there's no reason it shouldn't be smokeable), some a pumpkin hat (hehe) and a lot of pumpkin seeds, flax, wheat, and a few others. Also a few decent items tho it looked like it had already been heavily pilfered of the nicer things.

Anyway, I built me a decent sized pallisade and tried to build a house but it says I cannot (do I have to claim land?). I've now got a well, some crops I just planted, a plow, leanto/bed, bee hive (courtesy of the abandoned town) boat (same) and quite a few other things. It actually looks like a semi-working farm now :) I just bumped my exploration up to seven and am now getting LP for eight to find the rust root or iron root or whatever it is called that somehow helps you find a mine. I'm hoping there's one nearby so I don't have to move, but if I do I do.

Anyway, I'd like to start doing some hunting as I have quite a few arrows; if anyone could link me to the combat guide it would be much appreciated. Also some hints on what my newbie char can safely hunt and what skills to bump up to get better stuff would be nice as well. THX for the replies guys. Hoping to meet some live players soon :)

EDIT: Also, can you get pets? My primary interest is in something to follow me around and help me fight if someone tries to gank me. I know you can get cows and chickens and such (though I don't know how) but I see a lot of larger more dangerous animals with what look like young. Is there any way to take and tame the young (hint devs: if not this would be AWESOME. Especially if you didn't limit them except by taming skill, allowing me to amass a BEAR ARMY! lol). If this is possible, is there any limit on # of subservient creatures?

wow guy, you're a little all over the place there. to answer a few of your questions:

yes you can smoke hemp and it's awesome
animals a newbie can hunt: rabbits, chickens, anthills but the ants will fight back so read the combat guide on the haven & hearth wiki (google that)
and when you find the wiki look up "prospecting" too for information about how to find mines.

edit: oh yeah dataslycer linked to the combat guide up above, come on dude if you're gonna post questions at least read what people respond with

I've been looking at the wiki but I read in another thread that its badly out of date.

And yeah, sorry for being all over I'm trying to figure out what I wanna do w/ my character. I had an anthill spawn in my palisade tho so I guess I'll try to find that combat guide and take them on. thx.

There is a link to the combat guide already posted here, scroll up.

If the abandoned area is unclaimed, then it is free game to you. Unhappiness doesn't do anything yet so you don't have to worry about it yet. Currently you can only smoked cured hemp (10% bonus to food FEP for the duration) and Tobacco (Travel Weariness Reduction and increase Psyche attribute which is used for jewel crafting for the duration).

Houses need to have either paved stone or grass underneath them to be built upon, preferably paved stone to reduce decay rate. If you are planning to find a mine though, it may be difficult for you to find since many mines have been claimed and may be dangerous for those that are not experienced to protect it as claim jumping griefers may try to steal it from you at all cost (yes even copper mine). Having said that, if you are going to want metal, you need an alt or a friend with full industry slider to fully benefit from the ores that you mine. The higher the slider towards industry, the better chance the ore will be metal instead of rock, that also does bar them from silkmaking as well as trees and crops though.

Cool, thanks. I guess I'll make the alt when I find some metal. As to being wiped out by a claim jumper, I'm betting on my spot getting busted in soon anyway. Not that anybody much higher level than me will find much worth taking :D But it's badly located, more or less just where I chose to settle down when I got tired of roaming and eating apples.

If I make an alt does he spawn randomly, or are the spawns in one general area? I want to figure out how long it's going to take him to reach me. Also I see a lot of people talking about macros. I'm not using one on my main, but I don't wanna spend all that time levelling up another that's just a mining drone (buyable (or breedable I guess, two players get together and hit the breed button and nine ingame months later they get a bouncing little bundle of slave labor :D). Are macros against the rules? And if not can you tell me where I coudl find a good one to level up my miner? Or is everybody just writing their own?
