Maybe I did miss the point. Is this solely a map reset, or are characters to be reset as well?

It will ONLY be a map reset. Characters are not going to be reset. It's not a server wipe or anything like that.

A map reset does screw over newer players more than veterans, though.

Do you think so? I think veterans generally have been waiting to throw away hundreds of hours of playtime invested in their property so start out fresh. True newbies do lose newly crafted things like meatgrinders for example. But noone will have those after the reset. If you want you can choose to stay loner or join a town to get going again.

A new map means no more abandoned cabins/mines/etc in the middle of nowhere.
Personally, i've just now stuffed by inventory as full of tools and useful items as i can, and am now waiting on this map reset.

Maybe then i can actually get into a village.

I can say for sure that I'm not looking forward to lose my settlement and my beautiful wall when the map resets. Or my cellars. Or my cool mine.

Or my twenty crucibles. Or my coin press. ... you guys get the idea. I wish they'd put it off a while longer...

Whatever you've already made can be remade tens of times cooler with the new map features. Mountains and 'caves' and rivers!

Indeed, much effort will go into reconstruction. But this will make things more exciting.
