Hmm well. Xcuse my somewhat irritated reply then.
But no indeed, character names are not unique. There's a heartling out there longtime already sharing the name of one of our great warriors, which is kinda annoying, and confusing at times.

Names for hearthlings aren't even important as far as the game goes. It seems to use some sort of ID system for everything. Sometimes I go into my kin list when I'm really bored and change everyone's names around. When you memorize people, you can change what it displays to be relevant to where you memorized them from, but you can also do this for kin. Lots of fun changing the names to funny stuff and then reading village chat.
