Hi there! Meow pointed me at your post this morning so I thought I'd give a tiny bit of feedback from our end!
Yes, we are VERY clearly an alpha, we haven't hinted that we were anything more.
I've been informed that it has weekly updates but still seems very early in development, despite having been in closed alpha for a few years?
-Clearly the game is still in development, but we like having it open so we can get feedback as we develop. We actually have not been in closed alpha since 2009 I believe, and just opened alpha back up about a month or two ago. The dev team is composed of 3 people so as you can imagine it takes us exponentially longer than it would a team of 10+ people.
It definitely suffers from a lack of players at the moment, as most of its content is based on player interaction.
-This is true, but we don't advertise currently. Everything you've seen about us has come from players.
The controls are currently more suited to a gamepad than mouse and keyboard. These can be changed ingame, and it recognizes controller input.
-We've actually heard this one from a couple people now and we'll be talking about adding mouse controls.
The user interface has more features than say Terraria or KAG but can be hard to read and unintuitive at times.
-Unfortunately that's also a work in progress. What you see is not the permanent interface.
The combat system is interesting but needs more content to support it.
-We just added AI last night actually, and the combat system is getting an upgrade when I finish it, new moves/etc. We're also talking about adding hotkeys so you can quickly and easily switch weapon types and armor or use an item without digging into your inventory.
The art style is a strange mix of charming and plain, although it is clearly not pixel art and feels overly airbrushed in some areas. Characters have received the most attention.
-I can take full responsibility for that. The characters and backgrounds are ALL a work in progress, as you could probably tell while you were in game they range from detailed to half finished. A lot of the art assets are currently filler so I just applied filters to them to get them in game without having them look single toned. Those are all getting major upgrades now that we have a patcher. Also you really need to keep in mind that art is a hobby for me, not a profession, I haven't gone to school for this.
Crafting and skills are still very rudimentary.
-Again, it's the price to pay for being half developed. From what I understand the crafting system is in its most immature state, but the plans for how it will work in the future are all things that Gren doesn't like us speaking for him about.
We actually really appreciate the feedback because it gives us insight into the things that we need to do to get this game actually off the ground. I know it's grueling and slow, but we do the best we can with what we have.
