ok, sorry, i confess, i cheated! couldnt stand it and found out i hadnt watched this anime since it wasnt broadcasted in my area and all :? but had heard about it along with all those breads and the tune was popular enough that my ears caught it from somewhere else. the site says they also sell some breads overseas where its broadcasted... did it succeed?!

its another work of art by k. yoko composing. there is a non-japanese version as well, which is also very beautiful.

i LOVE the opening too, but every video i could find included the title and the animation and couldnt use for this game.

the intro starts with mongolian/tuvan traditional throat-singing called Хөөмий/Khöömii. (when you hear of throat singing, you may think of inuit one like tanya tagaq, basically doing the same thing, but very different. its more like buffy saint-maries mouth bow, making two tones at once.) anyways, even though the throat part in it was done by a japanese musician, it kinda gives a very exotic feeling to the tune, and the mis-matching of the ex-icon vet singer with typical old mecha anime melody...i just found it too perfect for the OP for this masterpiece of gundam anniversal series.

background music is ofc great too as always for yokos work with so many different essences, but the story and characters are also amazing. the very first gundam series that used a non-japanese protagonist, loran, who is not *weak* like others, and the very first to have the protagonist voice acting done by a voice actress for more "neuter" gender i guess (but many of you would probably get reminded of fma edward elrick if you watch it subbed), and the whole story goes around by the two female politicians, a moon-race princess and a girl from the earth who look like twins. the story starts with the conflict between the moonrace and the earth, but it leans towards peace-making negotiations than mecha fighting and have a big stress on the gundam history called "the black/dark history". even though it may perplex you a bit if you hadnt watched any gundam series before, it is surely made that even non-mecha fan can enjoy. (oh, btw, it is also the first gundam that used a non-japanese mecha designer! i know many ppl hate that "mustache" but i kinda like it and shows some time advancement.)

↑ the dark history part.

ok, enough with my essay

people call this group "irish punk" probably for all those music instruments they use, but they dont seem to like to be called that. whatever their music is called, i really like their music, only if....the female singer doesnt sing >.>
ive watched so many different football animes for decades, but this one ranks the top for the moment.

I'm not sure if they sold any bread, I just know that I learned how to make lots of different kinds of bread because of that anime, haha.

Giant Killing.
Took me a while to remember the name, though.

Edited for more information:

Since nobody seems to recognize this so far I'll give you some hints. I really doubt they will help all that much if the melody doesn't ring a bell but there's little else to do to help with that situation. Maybe it's also the fault of that awkward video but I couldn't find any other video that wouldn't have revealed the name of the movie at the first glance.

Anyway, here they are:
the style of the movie is somewhat like hollywood family entertainment except for all the gore, the setting is japan in the feudal period but most of the characters totally don't fit in, the focus is on fighting and the characters' different ambitions, karma is an important motif

Sword of the Stranger / ストレンヂア 無皇刃譚
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GnbR8g3TUE
the video had the credit of the musician, but this guy does many works and i couldnt tell which. reading your hint, i realized i hadnt watched it, so i finally cheated and watched it :P if the video you linked had that fue (flute kind) sound part with it, it might have been easier for those who have watched it.
it was a lot better than i had anticipated, was entertaining enough for me to finish watching it to the last. it indeed was a chanbara movie, the kinds we used to have a lot, just not anime, in the past. probably this movie would appeal overseas more than it would/did here. (but maybe young boys here who didnt get to see our chanbara golden days may have found it new and love it too.)
i personally didnt find it hollywood, but more like spaghetti western type, and i realized "karma" you mentioned is the misunderstood version of westernized thing :/ its more about your sin in the past than your karma that is shown in this movie. wish it had given more story to shouan and kotaro as a special kid, with true kind of karma behind, but it may be too much to ask from a less than 2 hour movie.

my next tune
http://youtu.be/C2BkJT9zGL0?t=7s
the singers father is said to be an irish/polish american, but she cant speak english as he left when she was too young.
the original story hasnt finished yet... the manga artist has been sick for like 5 years now and fans are still waiting for her come back.
borka got it right
↓ pv by Anna inspi' NANA(Black Stones) better than the animation title lol (anna just fits too well)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74MykOSTztI
↓ animation op (third)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtN6IcI ... .be&t=3m6s
in anime story, reira(layla), another singer, has the profile of Tsuchiya Anna - american and japanese mixed and lost father at young age - (which is actually why i mentioned that as a hint) but the character of nana just fits so well with Anna's handsome style (kind of manly) and smokey voice.
Olivia Luftkin, another american/japanese mixed singer, was picked by the manga artist that her songs fit reira's image perfectly.
↓ OLIVIA inspi' REIRA(Trapnest) used as ed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbvbd9P4IvQ

next season of this anime was planned to be created when the manga completes... we can only wish.

Hah, so you watched it after all. I'm glad you found it enjoyable.

Tonkyhonk wrote:i personally didnt find it hollywood, but more like spaghetti western type

Yes, you're right, the spaghetti-western comparison probably fits it better. But I've always had a soft spot for those too. Those old, cheap italian productions were rather popular here in general. And all that beautiful music made by Ennio Morricone...

Good times (to produce such nice things).

Ahh well... I remember how you explained it at some point here on the haven forums but it's easy to mix up ideas/concepts again over time, especially when you were not familiar with one to begin with. But I'll try to keep it in mind.
