 was it only broadcasted in asia?! ive seen this english dubbed and thought it was popular enough.
the most famous first season OP for this horror anime. urban legend, super natural, dark fantasy, name it whatever.
many of the excellent anime are generally from manga, but this one was originally created for anime. however, the nature of this story didnt give the creators an opportunity to make it happen as anime for a long while, and they created manga version for marketing. it got decent reception on shoujo magazine and it happened.

ok, next hint
many people compare this to death note, but they are totally different in my point of view.
both are, for sure, very against christianity (also against buddhism) but while death note is about a game, how far you can go and be evil and challenge the other side, this is about moral conflicts inside you (who watches it).

the site of this photo has absolutely nothing to do with this anime, but some may get reminded by it.

Turns out I had heard the song, but not seen the show...
All the hints you gave led me to Jigoku Shoujo and because of the comparisons with a bunch of great shows I think I'll have to watch this one.

Got another one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1lrn_pdOzo#t=97
Hint 1: Long-running comedy show, mostly slice-of-life
Hint 2: Ran alongside Bleach and even made some references to it, among lots of other shows

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IMmOiT3j94 (the japanese sub has a critical mistake but you probably dont care.)
:D please remember that the main story rather moves *very* slow and you may find it repetitive till halfway through. (and a few episodes are jokingly retarded, but i think you probably watch a whole season before judging it, so im not too worried.)
let me hear what you think after watching!

i have only watched a few out of hundreds (for some reason it always aired on saturday nights in my area, and i didnt get to watch it often) but knew the song and the pv and your hints helped ;)
it was originally from weekly Jump magazine, so yeah i can see it parodies many of Jump related manga.
i really like the voice of this girl singer and i think she is talented, but maybe not gifted enough...sadly she has only made hits when she sang anime songs.

-----

my next tune is an anime legend, especially overseas (supposedly)

however, the original tune has only those videos with obvious title and pics, so im posting two links that the theme song was based on. whoever watched the movie and remembers the unique sound can probably tell... i hope?!

① is a famous shouting or pep rally at one of our major festivals called Nebuta. it is used in the song, but you may not recognize it when you ignore japanese words anyways.
② is a traditional music of bali, called jegog, a form of gamelan. the original music group (or performance group) plays cross-cultural music and they are not well-known, but they are known for kecak festival in tokyo held in summers.

hints
1. back then, the word "anime" was still mostly used by japanese only and most english speakers called it "cartoon" before this movie, and those who knew what i meant always had to correct me to call it "cartoon" or "animation" instead. after this movie was released overseas, however, more people started recognizing "anime" as art, and not just something only for kids. im not gonna say this is the best anime movie ever, but it changed the anime world like a big ban and many got influenced by this legendary work.
2. post-apocalyptic cyber punk, super-natural, originally seinen-manga, most likely R18+ or harsher. hollywood has been trying to remake live action version for more than a decade now... are they actually trying? LOL

Akira had music that I'd only really hear when lion dancing. I can't think of any other anime that would have that. Mind you I saw it when I was a little kid though so I may be romanticizing what I heard.

i know what you mean, many asian traditional sounds are connected and have a lot in common, though japanese lion dance uses a totally different tune, much less of those percussions but with more flute type of wood-wind instruments.

btw, has anyone heard of any later news?

hollywood also puts on hold of kiseijuu too. (not expecting a lot, but im very curious how their interpretations turn out to be.)

ill wait for others to join in for your tune, that anime is still heavily rotated on cables here.
