Only thing sling is better for is killing bears (They seem to run immediatly if u shoot um with a bow =p). But yah, im pretty sure leather armor could negate sling demage lol, they hit for like 100, while bows hit for 250-350 with a q 48 bow and low-ish perception.

He was obviously talking about the screenshot in question, in which they're using a bow to hunt a bear, not a human opponent. Also since he made the comment that it's their first bear it's highly unlikely that they have the MM required to make using a bow actually better than using a sling.
