Maybe I'm wrong but the way I'm viewing it is that he was building the palisade and accidentally extended it too far (or simply didn't understand how gates worked) and was unable to complete the gate, so he built a ram in order to fix the error while also putting his HF on the empty space as a minor stopgap to help keep people out while the ram dried.

It's not like he's leaving it that way. He made an error and you simply caught him in the middle of fixing it.

I was pretty much there for about as long as it took to take the screenshot and then I put the table and chair in my boat and ported away. I didn't even eat the food.
