Awesome so caves are the only safe way to mine and even then the opportunities are few and far between.

I think this happens because the server doesn't calculate the exact position of the player and thinks your standing on a void tile. The best way to avoid it I think is to make sure you really do stand on a cave opening tile when mining. Don't stand to close to the void. Best way to do that is to mine with max speed so the player hits the edge and does that mini jump back a few steps.

What I mean is to try land on the cave opening tile instead of the void so the server doesn't count it towards a unsafe mining operation.

It also happens randomly in caves as well, I think it's just down to luck.
