It's not in the gameplay, but Peter seemed to say his fractal maps do generate altitude data and generate the water portion of the map from the altitude data.

Yes I am aware of that, but still there is no actual altitude in the game.

Here's the thing; procedural generation works by only taking what information is available to a single tile (that is, it's co-ordinates, and nothing else) and extrapolating a map from that.
Luckily it's possible to do math tricks that make consistent shapes, things like mountains and valleys and seas, without any tile knowing what the other is doing.

Now, it's possible that only the raw height data is generated procedurally, which will give you all the coastlines and such you might like, and define mountains and whatnot, and then allow a separate generator to finish it up, which might address some of the issues, but I don't know how one would go about doing that.

Now, I adjusted the statistics on the most recent multiple-continent map. If I used the old settings, you'd actually see separate islands and everything... but apparently this is too tropical. Maybe I'll tinker with it a bit more...
Surprise.

This is a completely different scale, mind you.
I don't see no ponds 10-20 meters away from the coast.

looks natural to me

I am reviving this thread instead of creating a new one about this. I love this idea, and I still wish to see it implemented somehow. It was such a shame to an amazing thread like this just die, that's why I'm bringing it up again. Although Haro Port was a miserable failure, and still makes me sad to think about it, having continents would completely change the game next world.

If something such as Peter's world was implemented in World 4, I would attempt to create New Haro, although it would be MUCH less seriously targetted towards being massive, and probably become an average village around a natural port. The problem with Haro was simply that it was too big too early on. The walls extended very far, and nobody even created their own properties. Not having anything personal to work on becomes a serious drag, and New Haro would be centered around building from the inside out, with no plans, just whatever we want it to be.

Anyways, if these continents were added, updates would also need to be made. An entire system would need to be added, "Sailing" as I would call it. I'm guessing that 3 different larger ship types being made would probably have to do, each one being able to walk around on, and a skill called "Navigating".

Wait, hold on, let me write this down and put it in suggestions...

Anyways, discuss this idea again, cause its so awesome.

Good, we hardly need a new one.

Continents would still be quite large, and there would still be plenty of rivers and lakes to go around. Of course there would be islands around the place that are different sizes, but there would probably be like 3 or 4 continents that were huge.

Still working on it =D?

Oooh, here's an idea. A natural crop that you can't get from wild seeds, and only grows on islands, not any continents. Sugar cane! It would allow islands to be natural trading ports, and I'm sure that an island in the middle of the ocean would definitely be a restocking port for long journeys.

If we are going to have oceans in haven then we need dock and ship support. Row boats wont do much with oceans.
