So. Hospitals and wells. I've had people try to explain how to do both to me, I haven't managed to do either yet though. If anyone knows how and wouldn't mind giving me tips, I'd apreaciate it.

Anything specific on wells you're not sure of? You need a hole in the floor with at least 4/7 (5/7?) water underneath and no constructions--stairs, ramps, etc.--in the destination tile the bucket drops into. Each time the well is used 1/7 water is emptied, so you need to make sure the spot has a continuous supply of water (aquifer, underground lake, or a flowing channel) or a large enough cistern to hold as much water as is needed. If a cistern is used, make sure water can get in as well as out so dirty water can be flushed if necessary. Depth doesn't matter.

Hospitals: set a hospital zone in a room or series of rooms. Add beds, tables, and traction benches. Make sure to add chests to store supplies in.

i drew an epic picture
Image

1) basically you want to dig out a resevoir bellow where you want the well to go. the size doesnt matter too much it just needs to be at least 2 z levels deep so your dwarfs arent drinking muddy water on top of no having any alcohol.

2) you then dig a 1 tile wide channel from the top of the resovoir (keep gravity in mind always when doing this) all the way until you hit the river (1 tile between the tunnel and the river)

3) build 2 floodgates and 2 levers build the floodgates where shown and connect the floodgates to the respective levers wherever you please.

4) when youre ready and have everything set up channel out from above the river the last tile to let the water flow (keep the gates closed for now)

5) control the water and let her fill up.

6) shut the floodgates when its filled.

7) channel out where you want to put the well leaving nothing but open space to the water below.

8) build well

things to keep in mind: keep the well away from any traffic they WILL fall into it. make a secondary draining system optionally in case something were to happen you could drain out the water. wells can reach down 10(?) Z levels.

If you're going to use the caves, no need for the complex setup. Just channel straight down from where you want the well. If the water isn't where you want it, dig a channel to where you need it to be so it'll fill. Nice thing is you won't have to worry about your water going stale from dwarves bathing in at the well.

edit: And thanks for the great visual!! I tried doing that in words, but.... just couldn't get it right and deleted the post.

The two big things you can't readily beat with a horde of dwarves are Bronze Colossi and specific forgotten beats with nasty breath and mist attacks. Some of these forgotten beasts will kill all your attacking melee dwarves in just a few rounds.

You shouldn't have a problem. Think of army ants swarming over a cow. ;) A few might get crushed, but it'll soon be overwhelming.
