That does seem rather odd. Most vaults are without gates. This vault even has a Crossroads. So I don't see how a gate would be the best idea..

maybe it's due to how they make their vault legal, having the gate there allows you to go out and destroy a ram that's placed in the only rammable location of the vault, unless the attacker strongboxes the gate
