Well now I feel dumb....

Yeah once you max out a current skill the bar will turn green and you can click on it to level it up.

Doing so also removes any other skill points you may have acquired during your current study session, so it makes for an interesting bit of strategy deciding which skills to level up and how.

Oh, there's permadeath. We can confirm that for you if you'd like, but it'll probably take another week to do so. In the mean time, no, nobody is dying, they're just getting knocked out, just like what happens in HnH. The difference is that you get dumped back to Boston (or your claim if you have one) with nothing left in your inventory and you lose some of your stats.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

Main reason I havent tried this game yet is because well I already like HnH and seems like just an ugly 3d version with less content

but recently a bunch of friends started playing it so I guess it cant hurt to get opinion from HnH players who have tried it, what is your opinion of it compared to HnH ? better/worse? bearing in mind I don't even care much about the graphics

Worse IMO. There are still a lot of bugs to be ironed out. The menus, (imo) are sloppy. Examples being having to switch to the chat menu to see what you've said and when you PM someone, what you say is in the darkest, worst possible shade of blue making it impossible to read. Switching to the chat window also removes your options like inventory, equipment, etc. Also when you open the crafting menu it fucking plops it right over top of your other menus in the middle of the screen instead of down in the chat bar like in hnh. This enrages me to no end. Another flaw is that it's nearly impossible to jump into the game and start playing with friends. My plot buddy had to walk 4 irl hours from boston in order to meet up with our friend at his settlement. Not only is that not fun gameplay, but 4 hours just to make say, a cooking/farming alt?? Swimming is completely broken, the community is very much like hnh's only with more people "trololol"ing and "wtfthisshitisfuckinggay"ing. Once you play more it redeems itself moreso, like hnh. But from what I've seen it's just one massive headache. Oh, and btw. Until you have a homestead you can't port back to boston with items in your bag so I walked 2 hours away from the boston claim (can't forage anything near it because of all the other players) and had no way to find my way back. I was forced to walk around for another 2ish hours in order to find my way back.

Oh yeah, and the skills are very vague in name and even when you read the tooltip (which is 90% bullshit RPing crap and 10% actual description of the skill) most of the time you still don't understand what they do.

I actually really really like it. The inspirational system is really cool, far better then curios imo. There's still some pretty fucked up bugs tho (if u get KO'd on someone elses claim ur stuck their until dev intervention or the next restart). It's pretty time consuming and the start is really slow, but im starting to like it more and more. We'll see if my opinion changes the longer it goes on though ;)

Yeah the new study system is really the most interesting aspect. I love how study items give specific stats and the strategy involved when leveling up. Also the fact that extra points are basically wasted when you level up it adds another level of thinking when trying to be most efficient.

One possible problem I could see with it though is how you can pile on multiples of the same item at the same time. It might not be evident right now, but later game when people have big establishments up and running, it'd be weird to be able to just brute force yourself up in level by just studying 20 straw dolls at the same time.

That's pretty much exactly how I got most of my skills. Straw dolls aren't the greatest, other items like wood shavings used to be a lot easier to farm out.

Tops/Crosses/Dolls(the log ones) seem to be extremely easy to mass produce and give really generous amounts of certain stats.

Not saying that I haven't used the mechanic myself, but it just seems really strange when thinking about it. Like the intended purpose wasn't to have people just mass produce certain mid-tier items and then just consume them all at once.

In Haven you have to supplement your craftable curios with some decent high-tier foragables if you want to be efficient. In Salem that's not really necessary because you can just pile on the craftables until you hit your desired goal.

EDIT : nvm found out in my history

EDIT 2 : oh well dafuq i have a strange bug, i can't see my claim outline (personal claim) no matter if i enable/disable the option
Right clicking the idol doesn't show the outline either, sick bug
the Boston outline works perfectly, and the few claims i have crossed upon when i was wandering earlier did show that outline, i dunno, and paradox forum is down.

EDIT 3 : fuck its working, but only when i am far from it, i have a similar bug with water
