I'm glad jorb encourages us to exploit the bugs as much as we want, makes it that much more of a thorn in his shoe to fix them =P

I'm sorry, but how do you justify thinking this way? "It's okay to exploit bugs if it's for a good cause"? Really? Really? Exploiting bugs is, plainly, cheating the game mechanics -- in some cases, it's okay for various reasons (in this case, "because the devs say so"; in the case of Nethack, this is sort of like savescumming, which is "justifiable" by the "well it's too hard for newbies otherwise, so we're not going to bitch too much" line of thought).

But "it's okay to exploit bugs if the good guys are doing it"? Seriously? Why? Down that path lies the eventual "we don't have standards of behavior because we're the good guys and can do no wrong".

For example: item duping

Group A dupes a bunch of steel armor to defend their players against attack and help newbies kill enemies. Group B dupes a bunch of steal weapons to kill group A's newbies. Group A is definitely OK, and makes you happy, while Group B is cheating?

Or a bug that leaves no scents during crimes (I'm making these up, btw; I don't think this exists):

Group A is made up of rangers who do this while hunting down criminals, so that they cannot be killed by said criminals and/or their compatriots. Group B is made up of criminals who do this so they can steal without taking an element of risk. What do you think of group A, and what do you think of group B?

Personally, I think they're all cheating, and all acting unethically -- in this case, ie, Dwarf Fortress the MMO, I think both parties should use the exploit to level the playing field, as the other fair solution (neither party uses it) is unlikely to happen. But I consider Group A to be cheating just as much as Group B is, because their intents are both to subvert the rules (intended behavior).

I mostly agree with Colbear, but Im guessing that the previous guy meant "not randomly screwing with the entire game." ie, crashing the server because they thought it was funny to stop everyone from playing. In both the examples Colbear gives, I think groups A and B are equally expoiting bugs. On the other hand, ATM I completely support this sort of exploitation, because the devs have stated that they are using us as a test population to find which exploits are the worst...and they generally then fix those exploits. If people didnt exploit them, they wouldn`t be fixed as quickly.
So IMHO, use the exploits as long as they dont involve stopping other people from playing.
