anyone here played any of the civilization games?

you know how when you start out a game of civ, and you have your 2 or 3 little cities, what happens then? the barbarians come with their stone axes and wreck your shit. it's a massive pain in the ass then, but what happens after? you rush tech, you learn iron working, you build swordsmen, and those barbarians that used to terrorize your city soon become nothing more than a minor nuisance.
