The items could be stolen and they decided to leave it with you to throw off anyone that might track them.

You can just track the hearth or perpetrator and see that it's not them that stole it.

am i the only one who decided it was a cool idea to put a "doormat" in front of our gate with gift baskets filled with food and seeds and other items and a rune stone telling them to take a gift and have a nice day?

i know everyone in my neighborhood because of this.
