mmm, Why not ... Sometimes (actually almost always) a takes more than one practical example to proof that there is no failsafe against random acts of Chance.

+ Country near active plate faults.
+ Location near big see.
+ On low grond level.
Lets build a Nuclear plant here.

... Guess its number was just up ...

Sometimes you have to take risks to make progress. It was a calculated risk based on what knowledge we have about tectonics/seismology (as well as all the other sciences of relevance). To say it was bound to happen is to say everything is bound to happen :?

Anyway, good luck to anyone living in Japan or who has relatives/friends/etc. there. Hopefully the casualties will be minimal, and the nuclear plants come out standing...

But, nuclear power is a terrible technology.

Compared to what? wind power? solar? Every power source we have has compromises of power output, safety, availability, etc. Building nuclear power plants means there's industry there, which fuels research, enhancement, etc. for those technologies.. anyways lets not argue about nuclear power plants in a thread about the tragedy in Japan.

Well too bad, I need to clear up ignorance.

After mining, processing, and transportation, nuclear power plants come out to be 14% efficient in creating energy. Also, many environmental problems result from the large scale mining process and we have no adequate method to store the radioactive waste that is produced from these plants.

Wind on the other hand requires no input of fuel other than the initial installation which doesn't take many resources to begin with. The only downside to wind is that some people don't like the looks of them and they sometimes disrupt bird patterns.

Solar requires no inputs either and work on the small scale very well. The only downside is the cost and that's quickly decreasing.

There's a reason why nuclear is the slowest developing energy technology and wind is the fastest; because it's better.

But the thing is, we can count on the nuclear energy also, can't we?

Coal and nuclear are about on the same level as each other believe it or not. Despite the emmisions, there's no radioactive waste or such a big impact from mining. Plus, efficiency is 70%.

Solar = needs sunlight, can't power anything during the night; at best there have been some attempts recently on large scale to use the residual power of heat left over from solar capture during the day. It's not enough to sustain energy demands of high population areas, and takes a lot of real estate. What do you do in horrible weather? Pray to sun god?

Wind = You need wind! who whudathunkit?! Is there always wind? is the wind always strong enough? It's not available in every location, lots of areas simply don't have strong enough winds. The energy output total from even the largest windmill farms is not so good, it wouldn't be enough for most industrial/high population areas. Weather effects this one too! But who needs consistent power? not me.

Is nuclear power perfect? fuck no. Is it even very good? fuck no! Do we have much of a choice? fuck no!

The world isn't cookie cutter perfect, wind and solar need at least a couple more decades of development before they can be anything more than a supplementary energy source. Ecofriendly is nice, but without the power we get from nuclear, coal, and natural gas, we'd be fucked.

I refuse to discuss any further, if you want to make an ass of yourself from here on out (surely you will), that's all on you.

You know you can store energy for later use and not have to have 24/7 production, right?

Oh look, I can post pictures too and this one shows how waste isn't accounted for in yours.

Just to say... It's really, really fucking retarded when people quote a post with large pictures that's RIGHT ABOVE THEM.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I've noticed that a lot too, especially in the comics thread and the screenshot threads.. I think people don't know how to edit qoutes..
