Are you suggesting that Republicans are somehow better?

They're not one iota better. What I am suggesting is that democracy virtually ensures that nothing and no one but bad and dangerous men will ever reach the government top. :)

Edit: That is to say that the present american and western european political systems have all degenerated from once constitutional governments -- whether republican or monarchical -- to a system of totalitarian democracy more akin to mob rule than to anything else. I am not per se opposed to some form of popular representation.

Agreed. A system where the first person to touch a large, flaming animal skull is the ruler would work much better.

Democracy is the worst form of government except for all those others that have been tried. ;)

Are you actually saying western democracies were once working well ? They always had huge flaws in my opinion. The only reason why we're only seeing them now is because 1) education and information level raised and 2) there is no more strong ideological movement to blind people.

At least that process doesn't explicitly select and promote those most ruthless at playing the politics of party and power. :)

The two most important people in the western tradition were Socrates and Jesus Christ, and both were killed by democrats. ;)

No. I'm saying that they weren't always democracies. :)

all have somewhat huge flaws somewhere. its more about how *less* obvious they can make to show to the eyes of the public.

copy-cat (from western/usa) government of ours call themselves as they like, as in, both 2 major parties call themselves "democrats" while their names hardly represent who they are, mean nothing, and there is hardly no arguments in there to have interesting enough discussions, sadly. talking about ideology in present japan is utterly fruitless to say the least, so, it is interesting to me how others look at theirs overseas :)

Yeah, monarchies worked much better, everyone had cake.

Making acquirement of power a competition in demagoguery may be bad, but at least it guarantees we don't get rulers like Charles II of Spain.
