The Chicago Haymarket Riot, which May Day commemorates, proved that people of all economic classes must have the right of free association in a democratic society.

You must not have read the Haymarket Riot article to which you linked. The police started shooting after they got a bomb thrown at them. And this is supposed to be commemorated for the horrible injustices made by the police (read: the representatives of the oppressing bourgeois society) upon the poor, peaceful working class masses.

For the record, I also denounce the implication that a "democratic society" is something desirable and conclude, in advance, that it is precisely this "democratic society" which leads to the injustices to which you linked.

The violence erupted after the police moved to disperse the crowd. The police were in the wrong to move against a protest that was, up until that point, peaceful. The protesters' later use of violence should not be used to justify the police officers' own injustices. Two wrongs don't make a right.

The initial motivation for the protest was, incidentally, an unprovoked police attack on a group of striking workers.
