I started this idea before we were attacked, I was going to invite nearby villages to compete. With the coin system, there would be betting/gambling and cash prizes.

Sad to hear you weren't able to finish it :(
It is a good idea after all.

Arenas have been planned and discussed countless times in the past. Looks like that isn't happening in a permadeath enviroment.

it's a lot more viable now with the ease of getting a half decent combat character up

One could still have only sparing tournaments.

The problem as usual is that people have to stick to the rules. To make sure of that you need some kind of enforcement. Problem: Finding people/a faction that controls the arena on a regular base. I can imagine this as a one time thing, but people dedicating alot of their play time just to control an arena sounds unrealistic to me. They would have to keep up with their combat skills as well, although that is probably easier now with curiosities.

Make it 1 UA alts tournament, with all combat skills of course. You measure participant's power level with a freshly spawned alts, if he takes off exactly half the bar he's legit, and you proceed to swear him into the tournament village so he can village port into it's walls. No way to break the rules like this, really, the worst that can happen is having your 0 LP power measurement alt killed.

Still need someone to organize it then. Preferably on a regular base.

The way I see it, OP, there'll never be an easy.
As long as people out there want to pillage and destroy everything you try to do, there is never enough you can do to keep it from happening, or to do it yourself.
Being non-combat means I got to do everything in my power to get the combat characters as up to snuff as possible, and they can't slack either, or we'll all be ripped to shreds.

Toughest part of this game is finding people that do not suck.
