What are some beginning recommendations?

Go to a tea shop and smell inside the tins. Usually it will taste pretty similar to the smell in my experience, so just look either for something you like or something that doesn't seem too strong.

White Darjeeling - i just drink some from Maikabari Teegardens India , handpicked, dried in the air in big baskets and not fermented ...if you like green Gunpowder you might like this too...

Chinese Lapsang Souchong tea also has an interesting smoky taste...
