I think that depends on the neighborhood your in and if you're traveling by boat or staying inland where nobody will see you.

Travel with a scarecrow alt. I do that from time to time in areas I know are a bit hostile. Plus, having a ridiculously wide monitor basically allows me to battle with two chars, provided they are both capable warriors. Not really a tip per se, but it may prevent hostilities altogether assuming your enemies don't want a fair fight.
